VIA Satellite

The Story Behind, "A Love Built for 2"(000)"

Way back in 1988 I was told by a friend that some guys in a band were looking for a lead singer.  I met the founding members Christopher Morley and Richard Anderson in their apartment in Murfreesboro, TN and auditioned with a Russell Hitchcock song.  I sang Russell's song because I knew it was high enough that it should at least impress them a little.  I got the gig and became the lead singer of Via Satellite.  We rehearsed a lot, we all became good friends and had a great time.  We played local gigs around MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University), and in Nashville, when we could.  We recorded a lot of songs in a small amount of time. Sometime in '89, Chris went into the studio with the drummer, Russell Nicholson, and bass player, Tracey Ayer.  They put down tracks for what would be a new studio song for us called "A Love Built For Two".  We started playing the song live even before tracks were laid down.  One thing led to another and we started drifting. People got really busy and we just decided to go our separate ways.  Chris and I still worked together for a while after the band split, but that too finally had to end when things got way to hectic.

Cut to the year 2000

I had been feeling a little nostalgic and started looking over the internet to see if I could find any of the guys from Via Satellite. I did locate Christopher in Florida and we began writing back and fourth and just catching up. I nagged a lot about getting all the old Via Satellite stuff on CD.  Chris had become an awesome producer in Florida and I knew he had everything Via Satellite had recorded.  He had been thinking the same thing, but on a bigger scale. He wanted to put together a CD boxed set of studio songs, live performances, out-takes, and solo projects that each of us had ventured away from the band for.  He then mentioned the song "A Love Built For Two".  I had no idea what he was talking about.  I just couldn't ever remember singing that song or anything about it.  He sent me a taped copy of a live performance and told me he still had the bass and drum tracks.  He thought it would be a great idea to finally finish that song.  I re-learned the song, went into a local studio in Nashville and recorded the vocal.  I then sent the CD to Chris where he and Rick, who just lived an hour away from Chris, worked on new backing vocals, new guitar parts and new keyboard parts.  I couldn't believe it when I heard it,  it was pure Via Satellite but more evolved.  Chris decided to call it "A Love Built For 2(000)"  marking the year it was finished.  I got a copy of it on a four CD boxed set that had other cool songs that I had forgotten about, but fell in love with all over again.

It was a great experience singing again with Via Satellite and it was a great way to close an awesome era and incredible band.  I want to thank the band, Christopher Morley, Richard Anderson, and Tracey Ayer.  We also had two great women that were involved with the band, as everything from management to lights.  Alyssa and Valerie; Thank you all for such a wonderful time and great memories.
